What If…?

wHaT If?

A speculative music history project

INTRODUCTION

What if everything we knew was completely different and history had been re-written? What would the music industry look like today if certain highly influential groups and individuals never existed, never broke up, or had done something completely different?

The Artists

The Beatles
The Velvet Underground
Pink Floyd

Overview

With this project we hope to search for meaning and theories surrounding possible alternative historical tragectories. This speculative history project imagines an alternate musical timeline in which The Beatles never disbanded, continuing to evolve together through the 1970s and beyond. Building on their experimental tendencies from Revolver through Abbey Road, the group becomes the dominant creative force of the decade, absorbing and redefining emerging genres such as glam, punk, and synth-pop. Freed from solo pursuits, Lennon and McCartney’s partnership matures into a prolific, tension-fueled collaboration that shapes not only pop music but also the political and cultural landscape of the West. The project explores how a unified Beatles might have influenced the development of recording technology, concept albums, and global youth movements, effectively becoming the gravitational center of post-60s counterculture.

Thank you for visiting our site and considering the questions we pose. Although this is a rhetorical research project it investigates the anatomy of the past present and future musical landscape and serves many insights into what may have been and what may be. It is not possible without your presence and participation, so once again, thank you!
